  • Beauty on the Mississippi

This morning, I remembered my camera. I’m so glad I did! Usually, when I pick up Catybug from the Church monthly lock-in across the river, I gasp in awe while I watch eagles soar in front of my car to perch in trees along River Drive. I know that the shots I get from inside a moving vehicle aren’t the greatest, but these are moments I really want to capture anyway.

They’re hard to miss, really. Big dark spots scattered throughout the trees lining the river. Some huddled together, some in flight looking over the ice for breakfast. All of them look perfectly at home and very healthy, a sign that their winter here has been good to them.

The river was calm this morning, their reflections mirrored on the water were picturesque. Preening seemed to be the task for many of the eagles I saw this morning, they must have already eaten and took to the ice and trees to lounge and relax.

It seems to be only during the winter, and only when I’m driving alongside the Mississippi on River Drive that I really love living here. These birds always take my breath away, and I envy those homeowners who live along the river. I would never grow tired of seeing an eagle perched in a tree in my front yard, or of watching them soar low over the river hunting for food.

I would also, probably, never get anything else done.

beautiful shots, I love having great mornings filled with beauty. I never seem to have my camera when I need it. I saw this amazing sunset back in the fall, I go down to the beach every evening, but it is never the same again.

Just beautiful. We don’t have too many eagles around here, I’ve only ever seen them at Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees in the northeastern part of the state, and that’s a good 3-4 hour drive from here.

Where do you live Leanne. If I ever knew I’ve forgotten.

I am envious that you live near bald eagles! We saw a few in Yellowstone, but not that close (or that … sedentary).

I’ve always loved bald eagles. I’m jealous of you, too.

Majestic is the word…. We’ve seen some Eagles too, both Golden Eagles and Sea Eagles, at our summer paradise island. Every time we have seen them I got the feeling of being honored. Once we saw an Golden Eagle nest up close! Huge one! and some Eagle youngsters that just had left the nest. They were not full grown and yet so impressive….

Those birds are wonderful. We here can only see them in TV… So you have a great opportunity… Even if maybe every place of the world has it own charm.

We went down to the Wisconsin River in Prairie Du Sack yesterday seeking Eagles, we found seven but never got that close. Lovely shots. 🙂

These are really incredible … I’d be proud to have taken any one of them.

I was in my 20s the first time I saw a bald eagle in the wild … in Yellowstone. I didn’t realize they went as far east as the Mississippi; I always thought they were cold weather, mountain birds. I guess you learn something new every day.
