    green pepper plant baby pepper
Ta-da! It’s been 17 days since I planted my garden, and I have progress! I was goo-gooing and gaa-gaaing over this baby green pepper yesterday. Here’s what it looks like now:

I got my hoe on yesterday, prettifying the “aisles” and adding cucumbers and another couple of musk melon plants, because I think my other two are pretty hopeless. The beets, bush beans and spinach have all germinated and are going crazy. I’ll have to thin them out, but first I have to figure out when and how to thin them out. I’m such a garden virgin.

Still scratching things off my to-do list, getting my girls graduated from 6th and 1st grades, gardening, Wii Fit’ting – and doing a bunch of extra stuff that my hubby usually does but can’t now that he’s one-armed.

The girls have been on summer vacation since Wednesday afternoon, and they were, in usual form, bored after being home for 10 minutes. Catybug went to her friends, Chickeymonkey invited her friend over, and since then it’s been crazy with slumber parties and sleepovers and playing rain in the driveway with the garden hose – and then, just when you think things have calmed down for 5 minutes, they argue over the Wii.

    Ahh yes. School’s out.

I have to brag though, Chickeymonkey finished 1st grade with a straight A average, and Catybug nearly an A+ average. Her GPA was 98.6 for the year – but her test scores (The ISAT) were at 99%, she tested at a 10th grade 5th month level, which is the highest you can go. (Beaming? Why yes, we are!) We are very pleased with the education they’re receiving and glad to make the sacrifices to get them a good one.

I’ve also been working like a mad woman over the past week, and though I wasn’t able to hit the studio as I would have liked, and I still haven’t gotten the progress pics of Jam and Rex for you, I have managed to design and launch a few neat blog designs. The next couple of weeks will be hugely busy as I try to get current again with everything – finishing design projects and paintings both.

I know you’re anxious to have a look at those designs, so here you go:

    • VividNUrban – this is an urban magazine style blog, the main page is all custom code to pull in all of the categories he wants to highlight, linking to each post and also the full category. You also have the option to read it as a “blog” in the main menu. It’s a sweet design, and nearly caused my brain to burst.
    • Fanboy@50 – Lew deals with anime and comics – he’ll probably be opening a shop on his blog as well.
    • Kissythecutie – Though Kissy is still formatting her content, you can at least view the design and the beginning of her career in the blogosphere. I’m looking forward to seeing where she takes things with her blog!

And that was my week in a nutshell – I’m looking forward to lounging around today and recuperating so I can start it all again tomorrow morning.

    How was your week?

I’m so envious of your garden! I just got mine planted last Saturday (when I threw my back out) and of course nothing is germinated yet…well except for the two pumpkin plants that I pulled because they were from my compost heap and right in the middle of the garden. A friend of mine told me that 1) I planted too early for here and 2) our growing season is too short to start tomatoes from seed…must start indoors or buy plants…so I went and bought some plants. Planted the tomatoes yesterday.

Another friend gave me some of her spinach (I don’t know how she gets those plants to survive our winter!) I made some yummy creamed spinach. reminder to me, creamed spinach is only good on the first day. LOL!

I went grocery shopping yesterday and stocked up on some of the memorial day specials.

And then I went and cleaned my rabbit’s pen. After doing that I’ve decided that I should clean the pen each time we empty a food bag. I had let it go for a while and carrying all that bunny poo got too heavy! (they have two litterboxes!) It doesn’t help that they add to the mess by shredding phonebooks & cardboard boxes. Hummm maybe I should talk DH into just letting the rabbits shread all the mail we get with our address on it. He doesn’t like to throw anything with our address on it out for fear of ID theft. I think he’s going a bit overboard.

And that’s it so far. We’re going to Church here soon. So I should go get ready.

The garden is looking lovely! When you thin your plants, think about how big that plant will get and just thin to allow enough room between plants so the leaves will only barely touch when mature. (If you don’t know how big they will get, check your seed packets or a good gardening book.) Also, if some plants look weaker than others, try to leave the stronger looking ones (not necessarily the tallest – it’s more important for a good healthy plant to be full than tall).

You can pretty much thin them at any time after they’ve germinated. Just be really careful not to disturb the roots of the plants you’re not pulling. Some of veggie gardening is very similar to flower gardening, and I know you’re good at that from the pictures you’ve posted of your beautiful flowers! :greenthumb:

Enjoy your garden! Hubby and I got mine tilled up today and I planted one row before it started to pour. So the sunflowers got a good soaking but I’ve got a bunch of stuff to plant still. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day! :gardener:

Congrats to Chickeymonkey and Catybug!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Love the garden! It’s ironic, considering my upbringing, but I kill everything pretty much on sight. :acorn:

Congrats to the girls! Taylor has finished 6th grade with only one B (not on the report card, only one B on one assignment). She finishes with a 4.0. Pretty cool, but I worry about what will happen when she really has to work for it. Garrett is already working hard for it, and although his results come a little slower they are just as sweet. Isn’t it fun to see them grow and accomplish so much? Kudos to you too mom, or they wouldn’t be where they are! Give them both hugs for me. Love your garden, I want a fresh salad now! Hope Mark is on the mend. Hugs, clara
