  • Bird Portrait : Kiwi Complete

Kiwi’s portrait is complete. Yes, I spent a nice weekend day relaxing in my studio and garden. I can’t help but be productive, because it doesn’t seem like work to me! Here’s the previous work in progress so you can see the difference:

I’ll likely finish Boo tomorrow, after church and other planned festivities. Then I’ll be preparing all of the portraits I’ve painted this week for shipping, and sending them out Monday and Tuesday.

    Projects, Projects and MORE Projects!

Just a quick update on my schedule, for anyone interested/waiting:

I’ve completed two blog designs this week:

    • SpencersGame
    • Eartodastreetz

And a few last week, in case you missed them:

Next week is wide open and I’ll be in the studio finishing up several custom pet portrait paintings:

    • Simba, a fluffy orange tabby
    • Kiwi & Boo, a pair of bird portraits
    • Jambalaya, a red & white husky portrait
    • Rex, a tuxedo kitty cat portrait

Then I’ll be back to blog designing for a few more weeks, then a couple more portraits, then a couple more designs … it’s going to be a busy summer!

Stay tuned for portrait progress updates!

Bird Portraits : Boo & Kiwi WIP #2

Kiwi is a Yellow-Sided Green Cheeked Conure, in case you’re not familiar with this type of bird. Many, many feathers yet to be painted.

Boo, a tiny little Pacific Parrotlet, will get more detail as well.

Boo and Kiwi’s background are done, they’re a nice grape purple with a deep violet shadow. Green and purple are M’s favorite colors (my client’s daughter), so they’ll be really cool portraits since those will be the primary colors.

I may add more to the background once the birds have been painted, to give them a bit more of a pop art feel. Realism in the foreground against a funky pop art background would be perfect for a teen bird lover, I think!

    1 Dog, 3 Cats, 2 Birds and a Girl

Many, many portrait sketches = lots and lots of art to create this week!

    Here’s what’s on my easel:

Badger is a certified therapy dog, she is allllways happy. I love that she’s smiling for her portrait. This will be an 8×8 oil portrait.

This is Morris, an orange tabby who recently crossed over the rainbow bridge.  He’ll also be done in oils, on a 6×6 canvas.

I’ve painted Callie before, but this portrait of her will have much more meaning since it is in loving memory.  Another 6×6 oil portrait.

Simba is a stunning orange tabby. Also in oil on 6×6 chunky wrapped canvas.

This yellow-sided green cheeked conure is Kiwi, she’s also having a 6×6 oil portrait. Kiwi and Boo (below) belong to Lisa’s daughter – these are a birthday surprise. So ssssh.

Boo was a beautiful parrotlet that passed away, her portrait pairs with Kiwi’s in 6×6.

This pose of Claire is just gorgeous, big curls falling down into her face – this is the line drawing for a 4×6 graphite drawing that All Adither won in January for giving me the bestest birthday wish.

    Titto Preening Completed

I completed Titto’s portrait today. I would love to hand deliver it and give him a piece of string cheese and see if he gives me a cat call or something. Knowing his personality though, he’d probably just stare at his portrait, bob his head and say “pretty boy”. Which is just as rewarding, since he already admires himself in his other painting.

I’ll show you the scan after he’s dry.

    Titto Preening : WIP #3

Titto’s underpainting is finished, now when this is dry I’ll go over the piece again and enhance all of the colors and each of the feathers.

Titto’s background is complete and drying, very cool sap and olive green tones complimented with indigo, ochre and a creamy naples yellow will really set off his bright plumage. He’ll just pop right off of the canvas when I’m done.

I’ll work on his underpainting and show you another progress pic tomorrow.
