  • Here’s Lookin’ at … You, Nut.

This sweet White-breasted Nuthatch is one of my favorite backyard birds. Whenever I watch them, I feel an immediate sense of calm and peace. They’re very serene, deliberate and curious creatures. Their little squawk is easy to identify, too.
Do you have a favorite critter in your backyard? I’m curious – and would love to have a peek at the different kinds of animals found in different areas of the world.

Very cute bird you have there! :clapping:

I’m not a fan of the birds that visit my backyard, mostly because they try to pilfer all my produce. But other than birds, my backyard is critter free. I know we get robins, crows, sparrows and some sort of yellow finch.

I don’t have a backyard now, per se, but when I did, my favorites were the hummingbirds who lived in my lemon tree. Not because they were sweet and delicate, but rather because of the way they took on a hawk intent on stealing their eggs. All other, bigger birds had given up the fight…except for the mommy and daddy hummingbird. So small compared to the hawk! So futile, I thought. But they kept buzzing ’round and ’round and ’round, diving at the larger bird that he finally gave up. I’m sure the fierce hawk flew away with a bit of a bruised ego to match his flesh beneath the feathers. And the victorious hummingbirds flew about, making uncharacteristics chirps during their flight (I usually only heard those sounds when they were at rest).

    So, um…my hummingbirds.

Gosh, I thought this was a blue jay. But when I heard your description of serene, I knew it was not. Don’t get me wrong, I love the jays. They are gorgeous. But they can be bold and pushy….especially when it comes to stealing peanuts from the squirrels.
