These ornaments are the best. 🙂

Every year, we make dough ornaments. This is one from the first year we made them, Caitybug and I, obviously Chickeymonkey was too little (she definitely looks like her nickname!). I have heart cookie cutters, a whole set of them that nest into one another, so we rolled the dough and cut a little heart inside of a big heart, then we used a straw to make holes where we hung them with pipe cleaners. We painted them, sealed them with glitter glue, attached the image to the back and covered the back with fancy colored foil (sheets from the art store) to reflect the lights on the tree. It was so much fun, a project that you remember from year to year because it hangs right in front of you. The acrylic craft paints available make it even more fun now, they’ve added metallics, iridescents, all kinds of different paints to choose from. They even make great gifts, straight from the heart (oven)!

Needless to say, I need to get on the ball in making this years ornaments.

How to make dough for ornaments:
    2 cups flour
    1 cup salt
    1 cup water
Knead, add more flour to make it really doughy if needed, sprinkle water to make it more pliable as needed. Roll on very lightly floured surface, cut shapes using regular cookie cutters of your choice, bake at 250 for 2 hours.

Only we did it with 4 cps flour 1cup salt 1 1/2 cups hot water and then “NUKED” them for 4 minutes!!! They turned out great!!

Isn’t that too much flour? They’re not chipping or anything? Hm.

WOW!!!! What a great idea! I’m so going to do this when I have kids. Heck I might even do it with my little kid friends. Thank you for sharing this.

Why not do it anyway? I see dough birds in your immediate future. 😉

John and I needed a “project” to get us in the spirit. His next day off we’re going to make ornaments. Keeping the cats out of them might be a challenge but they have to have fun too! Thanks! :yahoo:

Leanne, thats one thing I miss is my daughter’s little creations like that. I have saved them all. She is 24 now but I still have a little dough gingerbread man she made me when she was 5. My mom still has all of our little Christmas ornaments that we made, even though some are falling apart. They are still little treasures

Coming from a “daycare mom”, it is nice to hear that some of you keep the things that your kids make for you for Christmas when they are at school or daycare. We spend a lot of time working on them and the kids are always so proud of their masterpieces. It really gives them the knowledge and the that the true spirit of Christmas (or any other gift-giving event) isn’t in getting the present, it is in giving the present.

Ooooo like the paw prints. The ornament is a great idea. My cousin was just telling me last night that she tried to make one this year and burned it! I would have been able to laugh if when she was telling me this I wasn’t burning the eggnog cookies and setting off the smoke alarm. Yes, burning thngs must run in the family.

BTW- can you send me your 411 again. I lost your address thankx

We haven’t made dough ornaments, other kinds of handmade ones though… maybe we should do those this year. Time is flying so fast and soon she will be off on her own.

    Thanks for the recipe! :good:

Two years ago, we made cinnamon ornaments that also contained glue and applesauce. They smelled great, and we gave them to the teachers (using different cutters – I’m sure they were like, “What am I going to do with all of these?” LOL) and put them on the top of gifts with the tag. I was actually going to put that recipe on my blog today, because I plan on doing them sometime this week.

I loved that I was able to find this recipe again. I remember making them as a kid and now I can share it with my kids and the ones I watch at me house. We are going to send them to the dad’s who just left to go back to Iraq. This way they can have a little bit of home for Christmas. Thanks so much!!
    Merry Christmas!!
