I have never – in 13 years of living in this area – seen a pelican on the Mississippi River until this past Sunday. He was big. BIG. He surprised me, because he was among a big flock of geese, ducks, swans and seagulls that were resting along the river. Gorgeous.

He’s HUGE!
That is a great picture!
Beautiful and surprisingly statuesque.
beautiful!
i’ve actually seen pelicans in the wild, about 10 years ago when we were camping. i had no idea at the time what it was, had to really look before i could tell.
Wow, that is one big beautiful bird!!! Very cool!! Beautiful picture….you have such a talent! :good:
Awesome! Do you live in Illinois? Pelicans periodically spend their winters on the MS river. They may only stay a few weeks, or stay throughout the spring. It’s not a reliable thing, but it is nice when it happens. If they don’t stay through the winter, look for them again in the spring.
Great picture.
:good: I agree with you there about the pelicans. They really look beautiful. I have registered on your thursday thirteen though I don’t know how to yet. Will try to log in and see how I’ll manage.
wow, he is beautiful! i’ve seen a pelican in person only once. they are very large birds, which i didn’t quite realize until i saw one. great pic!
It’s moments like these that I never seem to have my camera with me…
I saw the biggest blue heron recently and ran home to get my camera… only to find it gone when I got back. *sigh*
I love this photo!
Global warming maybe?
