We’re not exactly city folk here, but not entirely country, either – so it’s not often you see a sight like this!

Two turkeys sipped water from the tray of the flower pot this morning as we drove by after dropping (sniff) the girls (sniff) off (sniff sniff) to go to church camp (sniffle, sob, sniff).

My hubby (Happy Anniversary, Hubby!) spotted them and thankfully they really didn’t care about having a car pull up beside them. They were busy getting a drinky drink. I thought you might like to see a little more detail, since they’re all wild and stuff – here you go:

Isn’t his feathering just beauuutiful? I want to print this photo and have cans of paint made to match his feathers.

It’s odd though, I’m guessing if you’re not familiar with wild turkeys you kind of have this preconceived notion of how they look based on all those “Tom the Turkey” images from childhood. I know I do – so when I see them I’m always thinking they must not be for eatin’, ’cause turkeys meant for eatin’ look like this:

Hm. Part of me thinks I should adjust this perception, and the other part of me thinks “nah, those wild turkeys probably taste all gamey.”

I Know that one!! I’ve had that problem so much that I think I’ve turned into a turkey!
You know, it’s “hard to fly like an eagle when you’re surrounded by a bunch of turkeys!!”
Excellent photography – as usual! If only I could remember to take my camera with me, I might – if I’m very very lucky, come across something that is HALF photo-worthy!
Thanks for a peek into citified wildlife!

    Gorgeous!

We don’t have such birdies around here, but if we did, I’d be stalking them. Mwahahaha…heh.

Anyhow, glorious work as always. All I managed to shoot this weekend was music-related.

Well the turkeys that we eat are all white! These two are very purty though. I know too many folk who would eat them though…they don’t care about the gamey taste. sigh

I hope your girlies have fun at camp…we’re off to VBS this week.

My granny (she lived in Tennessee) had a wild turkey that she kept as a pet!!! Guess not so wild after awhile. It was hilarious to watch her chase it around her yard. She was a big woman! :giggle:

They are beautiful birds…we have seen them out here a time or two.

so neat!! There are a pair of turkey’s that hang around Dave’s Mom’s house b/c she has chickens and peacocks. The Tom is always trying to make off with the hens and the peahen, apparently his lady turkey is not enough. These are gorgeous! :clapping:

I’ve been told, by those who hunt them, that wild turkey is quite delicious. It’s a lot of dark meat and very rich.

I keep trying to entice a turkey to get caught by the front end of my car, so that the only humane thing to do is bring him home and cook him up, but it hasn’t happened yet.

I’m about ready to bribe one of my friendly hunter-types into sharing…

What a lucky sighting! We have wild turkeys around here but they stay pretty far out in the field…have never seen one come up to the house.

I really, really loved this photo–so beautiful. Being a vegetarian, I would never, could never eat a turkey. Instead I adopt one every year from a sanctuary in NY. Of course they stay there but it does my heart good. I have heard many heart warming stories about how turkeys are smart and can be full of personality. That is more than I can say about some people i know. Hee-Hee.
