Don’t get me wrong, I love the jays. They are gorgeous. But they can be bold and pushy….especially when it comes to stealing peanuts from the squirrels.

Not because they were sweet and delicate, but rather because of the way they took on a hawk intent on stealing their eggs. All other, bigger birds had given up the fight…except for the mommy and daddy hummingbird. So small compared to the hawk! So futile, I thought. But they kept buzzing ’round and ’round and ’round, diving at the larger bird that he finally gave up. I’m sure the fierce hawk flew away with a bit of a bruised ego to match his flesh beneath the feathers. And the victorious hummingbirds flew about, making uncharacteristics chirps during their flight (I usually only heard those sounds when they were at rest).
So, um…my hummingbirds.

I’m not a fan of the birds that visit my backyard, mostly because they try to pilfer all my produce. But other than birds, my backyard is critter free. I know we get robins, crows, sparrows and some sort of yellow finch.
