  • Backing Up Is Hard To Do

    March

    2007

An imaginary conversation with a Dell Backup Support Tech today would go something like this:

Dell: Thanks for calling Dell support, how can I help you today?
Me: Well, I’m in a panic. I bought these DVD 4.something gig CD’s so that I could backup my hard drive, and they don’t work. Why doesn’t my drive recognize them?
Dell: Well, doh, you don’t have a DVD write drive.
Me: Nobody told me I needed one of those!
Dell: That’s why you should upgrade your computer every 6 months to the latest and greatest thing, you know.
Me: Well, crud. I’ve only had this one for 4 or 5 years. It’s out of date? That’s what you’re saying?
Dell: Yes ma’am. Can I build you a customized computer today?
Me: Um, no. Thanks. I would like to know how I’m going to fit 3 gig folders onto a 700 meg CDR without burning out the antiqued drive that I do have, though.
Dell: You’ll have to split up your files, ma’am.
Me: But I don’t want to. I have all of my photography split into months, and each month is about 3 gig.
Dell: What on earth do you take pictures of?
    Me: Squirrels, mostly.
Dell: You have that many squirrels, ma’am?
Me: I’m fond of my squirrels.
    Dell: How fond?
Me: Um, I have about 400 pictures a month that are just squirrels.
    Dell: Obsess much?
Me: Sometimes. They’re cute, you know.
Dell: I think you have a problem.
Me: Yes, exactly. How do I get all of these pictures to this itty bitty CDR?
Dell: No, I mean I think you have a different kind of problem.
Me: I have a lot of problems. Can we stick to the CDR thing?

(end completely awkward and totally fictional conversation with Dell support.)

I’ve been shopping for formal gowns, too. We’re attending a Military Ball and I haven’t a THING to wear. I also want to choose something that is appropriate for a wedding/cocktail/reception in July. Any good store recommendations?

i dont think you have a squirrel problem.
i think the imaginary dell person has a problem with squirrels.

ps- after i talked to you yesterday a mountain chickadee visited my feeder, and a goldfinch, and i saw a nuthatch up in the tree above my feeder.

The only scary thing about this post is that it happens all the time! Not your outdated computer but the person at the other end.

I am hopeless on picking out gowns. My advice is to just try them all on and go with one you like! Good luck!

My laptop doesn’t have a DVD burner either. I wasn’t backing up and lost a bunch of stuff including my 50,000 word NaNoWriMo novel a few months back. :duh: I ended up getting an external drive that connects to my laptop by firewire. I have a Mac, but I’m sure you could find something similar for a Windows PC too. I love it. It came with backup software that reminds me to backup once a week. It takes about 5 minutes or less to backup weekly. (The first time took a couple hours.) It cost a bit of money up front, but it is so worth it for the ease, convenience, and peace of mind!

Oh! And the dress. Check out your local consignment shops if you have any nearby. A couple years ago I needed a nice dress for a big fancy Valentine’s date. I found a gorgeous dress that looked brand new for a great price at a consignment shop.

I always wish I could buy some of those formal dresses I see, but I have nowhere to wear them.

I think White House Black Market has some cute dresses that could go formal or just really dressy.

Try Picassa. It is free on the net and your pictures will stay in their folders, will auto reduce to thumbnails for storage, but they do not lose full size or quality. You can pull them up to full size whenever you want them. The great thing is I am betting that with Picassa, you can store all your pictures to one or two discs. Picassa will keep them for you per their folders and scan your drive for other pictures. It keeps them all in a small neat package.

Just for example… I had 5 years of pictures stored on my PC… they all stored with the Picassa Back Up feature to just one disc!!

Gown…hmm. I wish I could remember the name of the store in the mall I just saw. Damn!

leanne, all those photos, your work…. this is too risky to lose!!! I hope you find a pro that can help you out.. don’t lose those photos!!!!
What about uploading them to an online storage site in until you find a way to save them to DVD, just in case?

With two teenaged daughters: every year I go through the whole cocktail party/prom/homecoming dress issue. Every year we shop in stores all over town. I don’t know why we bother, we always end up back at Dillards, where there really is a wider variety in price and selection. Their sales are pretty good.

    Good luck!

have you thought about transfering the squirrel pictures to those nice iron-on materials, and I believe you can accomplish that using your dell computer and a printer….then you could wear a squirrel motif dress to the event, made on your dell…and i bet you could do it with the current technology B) .

On a more serious note…enjoyed your fictional conversation. although backing up can be hard to do. Its why we are introducing a new service, Dell Data Safe, which Michael Dell outlined at the consumer electronics show earlier this year in Las Vegas. Think it might be the solution to your issues?

:friends: But my t shirt is not here…its there. your dvd drive is there…so I think we got you the dvd drive before I got the tshirt…but I cant wait for the tshirt.

tshirt, your dress, squirrel iron ons as back up and motif…I think you got a business going. You can always make a video about what you do with your dell and submit it to studiodell for airing. I know the Executive producer, so will see what I can do to get your video airing once you send.
