He’s an 11×14 oil painting, a custom dog portrait of a handsome black poodle – and he’ll be shipped later this week. I’ll scan and put up the final detail images when the painting has dried.

Here’s the first layer of Joey’s fur. His eyes, nose and mouth are done, although I’ll probably add a smidge more shine to his teeth and tongue. I’m estimating about 3-4 more layers of paint for the fur before he’s completed, but I’ll paint that wet-in-wet and finish his portrait up tomorrow.

This is Joey’s completed underpainting. This is the base from which I’ll paint his fur, deepen and brighten his eyes and mouth, and give his coat a nice soft shine.

BTW, this is an 11×14 oil painting, a custom dog portrait – he’s a black poodle. I’ll post another progress when I complete his underpainting.
Feels good to paint again. I needed this.

This is my sketch of Joey, a black poodle portrait I’ll be painting over the next week or so. I’m painting him on an 11×14 hardboard panel (aka masonite) in oil.
Pending final blessings from his mom of course, but here he is. I’m very pleased with how he turned out. I’ll post the final scan & details after he’s dry.

Looking at the last work in progress shot compared to this one, you can see how I’ve used the underpainting as a base for his right ear and his chest. I have most of the wave & curl laid down now, and once this layer is dry I will apply the final layer which will further enhance each curl, deepen and lighten his coat all the way around. Then I’ll sign him. (I don’t ever sign my pieces until they meet my own standards!)
So, basically one more layer which will be a very thin one just for highlights and lowlights, to really bring out each hair as much as possible.
