    bailey foster family rescue dog
After a few hours of going through all of the photos and submissions for my first custom portrait giveaway for 2009, I’ve selected Michelle’s submission of Bailey as the winner. Here’s her story:

We’re what they call a “foster-failure”. My sister is director for a no-kill shelter and asked us to foster a puppy for a week. Bailey was on death-row at another shelter before my sister’s agency rescued her. After one week with us, she stole our hearts, as well as just about everything that’s not nailed down. Bailey’s first week with us she discovered toys, stuffed animals, boots, and bathroom rugs. Everything was “hers” and she’d drag her haul underneath the dining room table. My 12 year old daughter would say “Mom, she’s jacking my Build-A-Bear again!!”, which just happens to be her all-time favorite thing to steal (pictured in the above photo). Every time I’d see her dragging my husband’s work boot under the table to add to her ever-growing stash, I’d say “and this is MINE…and this is MINE”. We’re all conditioned now to looking under the dining room table for whatever it is we’re missing.”

I did have four finalists, so you guys did an amazing job in the inspiration department this week! It was really tough to narrow it down to just one. In some cases, I found the photo itself inspiring – others, the story – in this case, both melded together perfectly and tugged at my heartstrings!

    Congrats to Michelle!

I loved that story! I had a big grin reading it, knowing what a hassle that must be for the family, and yet what a cutie she is. We used to have a dog that looked just liked Bailey, and he was my best bud for 14 years.
Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Bailey is such a good name for this cute baby girl! I like that she is enthralled by the toys and things. And the fact she was rescued makes her all the more dear. Is her tail short naturally? I am simply curious to understand. If it is a not nice story then please disregard my inquiry.

I am a lover of animals.

Thank you everyone for the congratulations. To answer the question, Bailey came to us with the already-cropped tail so I can only imagine it happened before she ended up on death row in the first shelter. They estimate her age at 15 weeks and it was well-healed before she came to us. I’m grateful that they left those huge ears alone.
Thank you so much Leanne; your work is so beautiful and I can’t wait to hang Bailey’s portrait on my wall.

Oh what a gorgeous puppy, I love all dogs and cats, well all animals to be exact lol. And Bailey has the cutest snout and brightest eyes, I think she knows she is well loved and safe and secure now. Good kudo’s to you for taking her in and giving her a safe home and saving such a beauty from death row, how sad it is that there are so many more that can’t be saved, my heart just breaks for them. I wish I had lots more money, I would buy a property and have all the dogs I could, so they could live and be free of abuse and fear.
Hi Leanne…. I am now back on line again. Thank goodness, I thought my right arm had been cut off lol, I felt so lost without my window to the world lol.

    Cheers Debra (Australia).
