Quaker Parrot Quintin pet bird by Leanne Wildermuth
Quintin, our Quaker Parrot, has recently taken to lying on his back in the palm of Catybug’s hand. He typically holds his head and occasionally “sucks his thumb” as well. When I saw this shot, though, I could totally relate to the “ohhhhh I have a headache” look on him!

I’ve recently come across a news story about how a Quaker Parrot named Willie saved the life of a young girl who had choked on her breakfast while her sitter was in another room. They’re such amazing and smart little birds!

Quintin, though, he just makes me want to take a few Advil and schedule in some nappy time.

Is there a physical reason he’s doing this? Is he happy or does he really have a headache? I don’t know very much about parrots. :sorry:

@Melody – parrots are such wonderful pets, as long as your comfortable around birds and beaks! He does this with Catybug because she makes him very comfortable. She snuggles him and he cozies up with her and sleeps on her. She’s been trying to get him comfortable on his back but it takes a great deal of trust for a bird to do it. He looks like he’s got a headache, but when he’s cozy he always holds his face and sleeps that way. I caught him mid-way into his sleepy face and thought it was so cute!

Aw he looks so cuddly! I hand fed a Quaker baby (“Punky”) for my vet boss who bred them… he was just adorable. My Senegal never lies on her back. She does, however, tip her head, hold a foot near it, and make scratching motions with it: “Do this to my head.”

    Gotta love ’em. 🙂

Awww…. He’s definitely screaming to me: “Oh, this headache, it’s killing me, please take it away”

Though I wish I was that cute when I have a headache…. Ehrm.

How sweet. I remember when my bird did this. He was such a cuddly one. Quintin looks so content in that picture. When a bird does that in your hands you know you are loved! lol. What a cutie – He’s very lucky to live in your home!

What a sweetie! I’ve had a quaker for almost 2 years now. He’s a ‘rescue bird’ that unfortunately couldn’t not be kept by his rescuer. She knew my wife and I were bird people and he took to me right away. He’s the sweetest little guy but can be a bit ‘needy’, which is understandable when you consider he went feral for a while, almost died and then has to say goodbye to his rescuer. It’s a tribute to him he can have that much trust. Quakers rock!

My Quaker, Miss Elmo, will lie on her back in the palm of my hand also. She holds my thumb with her foot then stretches her other leg out straight and stretches her neck along my extended index finger and naps and ‘accepts’ scritches.
