Some dumba$$es decided it was my turn to be hacked, so they dumped a “Paypal” folder into my domain and mass e-mailed a bajillion paypal users with some crap that they needed to update their password, etc, etc… You know the spam mail some people forward to spoof@paypal.com? Yes well the fraudulent link that people were redirected to? Right here on MY OWN DOMAIN. Bastages. Truly. I *wish* upon the biggest brightest star that people used their intelligence for GOOD, not EVIL and make real money doing real productive things in this life.
GAWD some people really truly SUCK!!
So my domain was suspended temporarily, I frantically spoke with my hosting company and they were so very nice about what I needed to do. All is well again, but you know? For a half hour or better I coulda just thrown up.
The good news? Really, there isn’t any. Come on. I just deleted the folders, but those jerks are still out there, and will do it to someone else. I wish there were good news.
Is it time for a password change on all of your accounts?
UPDATE: A great way to avoid this on your own domain? Go into your cpanel, create a paypal folder, lock it up with a password, and then add a redirect from that paypal/ directory to your index page. There. Then if they try to dump that crap on your server, anyone who clicks the link in a spoof e-mail will get redirected immediately, and the hackers can get to work on another evil plan to destroy random webmaster’s days.

What a bummer! Sorry that happened to you. What a pain. I’ve had strange malware and spyware on my computer this week. Luckily Zone Alarm alerted me that the programs I had opened were requesting to record my key strokes and mouse placement. So I was able to take the necessary steps to clean my computer. Strangely, it always happened after I had opened Yahoo Instant Messenger. ????
Anyhoo, glad your domain is back to normal. Have a super duper weekend chickie poo!
P.S. I’m in a YAZ kind of mood! 😉
A couple of weeks ago I kept getting email telling me to update my ebay and paypal info, complete with links.. I mailed them to the ebay people and of course they were fraudulent. I haven’t had any more since. I wonder why. Sorry this happened to you Leanne. My computer has never quite been the same since I had to clean off a nasty persistent virus a few months ago.

Oh that eBay and PayPal has been going around a while. Also banking, they just randomly send them out hoping you actually use that bank and fall for it. I didn’t realize they randomly used innocent peoples sites for it, though.
I kept getting those to update my Yahoo! account. I finally went MYSELF to Yahoo’s help menu and sent them the info. They said thank you very much for the info because of course they do not send you e-mails to update your account!
It sucks that weirdo’s do that!
I’m definitely always one to forward on the spoof e-mail to paypal for them to shut the hackers down – sometimes I blamed the owners of the site under my breath as if they were aware of what was going on. Well now I know. It’s definitely more personally violating to have your own computer hacked – but it’s equally frustrating when people hack into random website servers to do this junk. 👿
How awful. I did try to get here yesterday and couldn’t get to your site. When I started my site in February I didn’t hear much about this but it seems to be everywhere lately. I dred this happening to me.
