Kiki is done. Daylight is gone and this is the best pic I can get of her tonight to show you – but man. I have to say, when I finished this one I shed a single tear. As it was running down my cheek I wondered if it was just from sheer exhaustion, pride, or pain shooting down my hand. Probably all three – and a little regret, as well, since I couldn’t bring her home with me the day I met her. Dang she’s pretty.

(view the work in progress here.)

I’ll show you a better pic tomorrow.

Updated with more accurate daylight pic (you may need to refresh your browser a couple of times to see it), and also – here’s a closeup of her face.

    Violet Monochromatic : Jayden

“You’re turning violet, Violet!” kept going through my head during my Chickeymonkey’s purple portrait painting session today. Of course the moment I completed Caitlin’s yesterday, she was right beside me saying “paint me NOW.” She couldn’t wait to be purple! And now, she is my little purple Chickeymonkey.

This is the final portrait in this series of six oil paintings for my exhibit. I’ve got quite a lot of work to do yet, but it does feel good to have this whole concept finally down on canvas to giggle over. It’s a happy series, playful – joyful – colorful kids. Here they all are in my studio together:

I hope they bring a smile to your face, too!

Number 5 of 6, my very own gigglehead Catybug in a pretty blue monochromatic portrait. I won’t tell you what she was giggling about, she’d probably disown me, or at least frown really big and cross her arms. (You know, she’s ten.)

Did you know that I offer a custom 8″ x 8″ monochromatic portrait package for just $140? You can see my portrait packages right here, if you wanna look.

Here’s Evan, he’s the fourth of six 10″ x 10″ pieces in this series of monochromatic paintings that will be on exhibit. Two more to go in this series and then I’ll be completing Kiki and then – last but definitely not least, the Heron.

    Yellow Monochromatic : Austin

Halfway done now – this is my little yellow dude, Austin. He’s number three of six in the series.

(Can you see where I’m going with this?)

Other tidbits – this is my 16th painting of the year (47 days into the year). I have 11 days and 11 hours to have all of my exhibit pieces ready to hang, and either 5 or 17 more paintings to complete, depending on how things go over the next few days.

    Red Monochromatic : Alex

One in a series of six for my exhibit, I was up late lastnight finishing this red monochromatic portrait of a sweet young lady – her name is Alex (everyone say HI to Alex!). This series will all be 10″ x 10″ square paintings in oil. I’ll be working on the next one (or two) in the series today.

Painterly tip: The secret to getting a light red without it becoming pink is this: cadmium red, flesh tint, titanium white.

This is Kiki’s underpainting. She’s a stunning calico and will be a beautiful addition to my exhibit next month. The next time you see her, she’ll be finished. She’s 16×20, a nice big size, larger than life size, actually.
