I’ve just completed the underpainting on this custom cat portrait, and it’s going to make for a great base for the layers to come. I joke around with my friends about my underpaintings, always justifying the colors I choose for underpaintings by saying “well? if you shaved him that’s what he’d look like, right?”
I’ve got a lot done, but have a ton more to do. She’ll end up with another layer of darks, then at least 3 light layers of poofy floofy hair applied strand by strand. She’s a white cat. Trust me. (Her eyes etc. will be further refined & enhanced as well. Whiskers come last, well, right before I sign it.)

That’s very dramatique!
The lighting on this one is really neat indeed!
I am always fascinated by the underpaintings. I recall my mom’s Bijon, Max, when he was shades of purple!
scary?! SCARY?!? Nut-uh. She is not. She’s really beautyful!
Carrie, I get what you mean, if that helps any. This kitty looks really serious, very stoic and the painting is almost Elizabethan in tone. I love it. Even if it is a kitty.
Carrie.bo.berry. I know what you meant, girlie! I was just sayin’, I don’t want my new people comin’ here freaking out thinking -iew- she’s painting a scary kitty! 😛
Had to show the reference photo, I thought about putting it up with the work in progress, but man it takes a lotta time for my blog to load as it is!
I just love that kitty! She has a beautiful kitty smile … mouth turns up so pretty. Can’t wait to see her finished.
