  • Custom Portrait Winner & Call for Entries : Week #34 (8/17-8/21)

    Custom horse portrait of Maxx
Today begins Week #34 of my 2009 weekly graphite portrait giveaway! Each week, one winner will be selected to receive one 5×7 graphite (pencil) drawing from their photograph.

Last week’s winner was Melissa, she shared a sweet photo of Maxx and his story:

Maxx was a longtime resident of Castskill Animal Sanctuary, a haven for abused and abandoned farm animals. Maxx was a former show horse who hurt his leg when jumping a fence. His owner was dying of cancer and asked CAS to take him in. She wanted him to live the rest of his days at CAS and to not be adopted out. Maxx was an incredibly kind and gentle animal. He was the horse that everyone learned with: how to put on a halter, how to walk a horse, how to groom, etc. He actually helped you put his halter on and take it off. His favorite game was giving you a backrub. Sadly, Maxx was euthanized on August 5th due to severe hoof problems. He was nearly 40 years old. His halter reads: Maxx — you are loved. And he always will be.

You can read her entry in full here.

    Weekly Contest Announcement!

WEEK 34 : CALL FOR ENTRIES
    Theme

: ANIMALS (single subject – dog, cat or any other critter!)

    Deadline

        : Friday, August 21, 2009 (around 5pm CST)

    To Enter

: Leave a comment as your entry (your chances are greatly improved if you share something about your subject), include a link to your photo. If you do not have a photo uploaded online, please indicate that you are e-mailing the photo and e-mail the photo to: gallery *at* intricateart dot-com.

Your entry must be left below, or it will not be considered.

    Note: *G* Rating only

Each Monday, I post the weekly Call for Entries along with the previous weeks completed portrait (above). I may change the subject theme each week, or leave the theme open, so please pay close attention to the details in each announcement.

Entries will be accepted through Friday afternoon around 5PM CST, at which time I will close comments and select one winner from the entries received. I’ll publish the completed winning portrait with the following week’s Giveaway announcement. If you’re a fan on Facebook, you might just get a sneak peek at the winning portrait before I publish it here!

Qualified entries will include a valid e-mail address, and the comment should include one link to a photograph owned/taken by the entrant. If you do not have a place to upload photos to link one, you can e-mail it to gallery *at* intricateart dot-com. Your entry, however, should be included in the comment section below, with your story – should you choose to include one.

The Selection Process: In case you’re curious, I’ll share my little artsy process in selecting the winner. First – I do not read any entries at all during the week. I do not read them because I don’t want anyone’s entries to have any more time than any others to settle in my creative brain. At the end of the week, I close comments. When I sit down to go through all of the entries, I read the story first, and open the photo link in a new window. When I finish reading, I flip over to the photo and my initial reaction is what I go by.

If your entry is not chosen, you may enter again. I encourage you to include a short story with your entry.

Once you have won a portrait, I ask that you refrain from multiple entries, to give others an opportunity to win one as well.

Your challenge? To inspire me! Choose your photo wisely – I will select a winner based on how the photo and/or story moves me.

    Good luck!!

Okay this cuddly little guy isn’t exactly a pet but he was in our back yard for a couple days. He was finally trapped and hauled out into the forest so he could learn to find his own food with out raiding garbage cans.

To say someone will be greatly missed will be a true understatement. Haas came into our lives about three years ago when we adopted him from the pound. He became our son / best friend. He was a great pheasant hunter and was always over excited to run after a tennis ball. Aug 4th will forever be the worst day of my life. In one day we lost our best friend (hit by a car) and had a miscarriage. I wanted to enter this contest for my husband. I thought it would be nice to have a portrait of Haas to put with his memorial display box. I will be e-mailing the picture. Thank you!

Lovely! as always – beautiful work. Sorry, I’ve been absent – we are house hunting – exhausting.

Lego is my 13 year old sons Golden Retriever. Our son has wanted a dog for years, when he turned 12, we decided he was ready. We researched all the breeders, this family kept the puppies in the house, house trained them, had both parents living indoors, papers from 12 generations back and they chose us due to the amount of questions I asked and the amount of times I called back with more questions. Lego has been a gift to our family – he is one of the family. We love him so much and joke about whose dog he is. We all claim him. Lego has been good for me as I love to walk and can’t get out of my early morning walking because he lays his face on my pillow and huffs at me that it is time to get up and get moving. I can’t be grouchy – I mean, look at that face. I would love to give one of your drawings to my son for his room

    I’ll try again… 🙂
Another sad story here… I know I’ve won a portrait of Foofur for myself, but I hope you don’t mind entering for my husband Ron. As Foofur is my dog, our furry friend Boris was his. Of course we both love both dogs like crazy!
We got Boris when he was two years old. His owner was moving to Africa and couldn’t take him. Through an e-maillist I heard about him. When we drove to Belgium to get him, he enchanted us with his beautiful eyes. 🙂 He was a big friend to evryone, including Foofur and the cats. Bastet, our black cat, was his buddy: she washed him, cared for him, slept close to him…
Unfortunately Boris got sick some weeks ago. We tried everything, but things got worse. It turned out he had an inoperable brain tumor. We had to take a difficult decision, but we let him go to the Rainbowbridge last week (Monday). He didn’t deserve to suffer. We miss him sooo much…
    His picture is here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=72405&id=677652271&saved#/photo.php?pid=2102495&id=677652271

Max’s story has me crying, as do a couple of the other entries into this week’s contest. I was going to re-enter Annie’s photo this week but because I am so fortunate to still have Annie with me, I would love to see one of the other entries this week be chosen instead. I think anyone who has lost one of their cherished companions should have one of your drawings to remember their loved one in a very special way.
