It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.”

How fitting for Memorial Day – I just don’t recall that poppies bloom this early in summer! Lovely!
Thanks, Cao – they just opened up this morning – I was expecting them next week, maybe – the buds are big but didn’t give any hint that they would open overnight!
These are huge poppies, not wild – the small bud on the right is as big as a golf ball. The large poppy in the center – probably the diameter of a softball.
Growing up we used to have poppies in my great-grandmother’s garden – they are spectacular and grow to be surprisingly tall – as I recall – as tall as peony bushes or so; but very different leaves.
Do you know if they keep well as cut flowers? We never cut them – just left them blooming in the yard – they were so spectacular.
Nice! If I put them in the ground, I’d fear pulling them thinking they were weeds – they look like prickly bushes!
These are very tall. I have them in a raised bed (so 12 inches off the ground or so) and they’re probably 3 feet tall.
I don’t cut mine, either. They do really well in dry soil so I leave them alone & enjoy them where they are, too.
Yeah the prickly-ness could fool people into thinking they’re weeds, LOL!!! But the tall wild weeds I’m thinking of bloom later and have purple flowers.
I’d say the blooms are as tall as my peonies, but the foliage is low, and definitely looks weedy!
Beautiful! They look like crepe paper; reminds me of the “poppies” we used to make as kids on Memorial Day.
Lovely blooms Leanne, as usual I’m about a week behind you with the flowers, my poppies have huge great buds but don’t show any signs of opening yet
