  • Emily the Poodle : Dog Portrait Sketch

    January

    2008

I’ve worked up a couple of dog portrait sketches today, this first one is Emily. She’s a lovely little white poodle that I’ll be painting on an 8×10 canvas in oils. She’s going to be sitting in grass, similarly to Cleo, a custom dog portrait I completed a couple of years ago. I’ll show you the painting as her portrait progresses, of course.

    The Sneaker Experiment

Like every good girl on the planet, I have a special place in my heart, and closet, for shoes. There’s a shoe for every mood, and every occasion. Some shoes can cross over, most can’t. I have a couple pair of mules – slip-on’s, we call them, of the backless kind. I like them, because as much as I love shoes, I am lazy about them. With these, there’s no bending involved, you just step in and go. Perfect! I’ll take two pair -one dressy, one casual. Oh but wait – I forgot – one in sneakers, too!

sneaker experiment shoe painting craft' class=For months, I’ve been on the search for the perfect pair of mule tennis shoes. At last, they’re mine! The only problem? They’re white. OHHH how I hate white. It’s so, so – so absent of color! Bah!

White and I only get along in small doses, when surrounded by color. So herein lies my problem. How am I going to color these shoes?

By the way, these were the bargain of the year at just $5 – so I could NOT say no to these well padded 1980’s reminiscent sneakers.

Back to the problem. They’re white. What can I paint them with that won’t bleed onto my socks or fade – Sharpies? Food coloring? Clothing dye? (None of which I have on hand. Honestly.) – and more importantly, what color do I want them?

As luck would have it, my wonderful hubby had just cooked dinner. Teriyaki chicken. Mmmm. And you know, I thought to myself, teryaki stains clothing. Yes, it does. And yes, I did.

The softest, sweetest bunneh on the planet. And she’s alll mine. You cannot have her.

(Doesn’t she look JUST like Thumper?!)

    yellow Asiatic lilies lily bouquet

There’s nothing better than blooming flowers in the middle of January. I am so grateful for the people in my life who make sure that my winters are saturated with the colors and smells of summer! I received two bouquets of gorgeous flowers for my birthday that have opened up and done really well (considering they’re cut) and also, I’ve been waiting since just before Christmas for this gigantic Amaryllis to bloom that Lisa sent (and I promised pics once they opened!) – they’re SO big and full and just beautiful.

    amaryllis

I had a dream just last night – in it, a hummingbird came right up to my face and snuggled my cheek. pffft. That’s how much I miss warm weather! Even Chickeymonkey told me about a dream she had the other night, my office was filled with pink, white and purple roses and tulips. There were “flowers EVERYwhere!” she said. I LOVE HER. Aaah. It’s just a few months away, right? All the bulbs I planted last fall combined with everything I planted the year before, the hummingbirds and I will be loving our daily breaks in the backyard!

    Enjoy!!

    Recent Blog Designs

I’ve been quite busy lately, and haven’t even had the chance to post individual screenshots of these designs for your viewing pleasure. Here are the designs I’ve completed recently if you’d like to go have a peek!

    • LifeCruiser – LifeCruisers 3rd design, this one is a two column seascape done up in shades of blue.
    • Brit Out Of Water – an EW client, he’s been in the States for 152 days now (today, according to his sign), and he’s got some hilarious stories and goings on in his life since his arrival. He’s got a two column cityscape design, the UK in the background and NY in the foreground.
    • Phone News – another EW, this one is in Beta right now and will have a few more mods before it’s “officially” complete, they provide a great resource for all things wireless and cellular.
    • 94 Monkeys – an EW client, this is a blog for medical students. They had custom illustrations done up of all of their monkeys in a “hear no – see no – speak no” fashion, which are very cool.
    • Nappily Evah Aftah – Tracey is in love with the art of LaShun Beal, so her theme is based on the painting Ebony Beauty. It’s got rich, beautiful earth tones and sports the sought after tabbed menu container to really organize her sidebar.

You can see I’ve been crazy busy, these are just the designs I’ve completed so far this year, not counting my own portfolio and blog here. I’ve got a few more designs in the final stages and smaller busy work that keeps me hoppin’ all day, and so many more on my “to-do” list, I’m good through the end of February.

I’ll be in the studio painting the end of next week, and I’m all too excited about that! I received another new order this week for a custom dog portrait painting in oils – I’ll be sketching up both of my commissions this coming week.

So there’s a quick view of my life, 18 days into the new year – how’s yours goin’?

My Groovy Birthday : A Recap

My Birthday started a day early, even, as my dear friend Lisa sent along a Groovy e-greeting, where she spent hours, apparently, scouring for my face and cropping it just so that I could do this very Groovy Birthday Dance on screen. I was feeling all giggly and shiny happy-like, starting my celebration a day early and all. Everyone should have a two-day birthday, I think!

And then it happened. I actually turned 37. And nothing changed, except that new number I have 366 days to try to remember – or forget – depending on the day. My gray’s didn’t get any grayer, my face didn’t get any wrinklier, so that’s a good thing.

birthday muffin cake blog party invite photo
Today marks my 37th year on this planet. Though my latitude and longitude seem a bit off, I think I’ll be here for at least a little while longer.

It’s kinda cool having a birthday at the beginning of the year, it’s not just a New Year then, it seems like there’s this whole rebirthing thing going on in my head every January. The getting the mind ready for a new year, the mucking up my food choices for just 15 more days. The countdown until Christmas, then the countdown AFTER Christmas. Aaah now I can get on with the year.

Why do I feel like giving something away today? Hm. Maybe I’ll do that. Okay.

The best Birthday wish (left in comments) gets a custom 4×6 graphite (pencil) drawing. Did you get that? You’re actually going to win something on MY birthday. Heh, am I desperate for Birthday Wishes or what? Bring your friends, for the love of Birthdays. I’m having a party! Make me laugh, make me cry, be sincere or silly – the wish that moves me the most wins.

And have a cranberry muffin! It goes great with coffee.

    Love, your Birthday Princess.
P.S. That is my cranberry muffin. Mm.

    All Matchin’ and Stuff.

I’m buggy as all get out too, I think. Welcome (you have to come see) to my 2008 Blog Revamp, made to match my Portfolio revamp launched on the first of the year.

If you see any bugs, please let me know so I can squash them early on. My eyes and mind are both a bit wonky and I’ll be taking the evening to rest and refresh – more blogs to design this week, and a sweet white dog custom portrait painting to begin, too!

    – thank you, IE, for the gargantuan headache. :grumbles:

    Enjoy!

Lee, Thou Hast Redeemed Thy Denim.

leejeans.jpgFor years, Lee Jeans have been atop my “Jeans to NEVER try on again” list. Obviously, I lost either my list or my mind, because I slipped into a pair of these new Custom Fit Collection Jeans the other day. I was impressed.

Levi’s stole my heart a long time ago in the jeans department. They fit like jeans should fit, at least on my lumpy bumps they do. They’ve spoiled me with their straight legs, low rise and invisible seams. I am not a yellow/orange thread on dark denim kind of girl. That is at the top of page 3 in my “Things That Are Tacky” book (not yet sold in stores). The pockets – oohhh the pockets. They’re meant to make your backside look a little bit country, you know, and that’s just what this midwestern girl needs.

Now Lee has finally figured it out. The straight leg. The slight stretch jean. The comfort waist that – although is a little wierd at first – leaves absolutely NO gap. No valley’s will be catchin’ air with these jeans. They have a straight leg, not too tight, not too loose – and they’re just the right length. (Pants that drag on the floor: bottom of page 2.)

Thank you, Lee. I am impressed. I can now officially rescind my “I’ll never own a pair of Lee Jeans” declaration that I have repeated (to myself, mainly) over the last couple of decades.

I must know – who has stolen your heart in the jeans department, and which jeans will never see the inside of your fitting room?
