Moms – Lock Up Your Daughters

I had some fun with my camera lastnight – what started out as a “Kids Christmas Card” photo session wound up as “The Two Oldest Kids Pose As Fashion Models” photo session. My daughter contently watched me over my shoulder as I proofed the shots lastnight, too.

Let me tell you, if you’re looking to hook up your daughter with her soon to be husband? This one is taken. Heh. That’s all I am going to can say about that. :muted:

Keep on reading to see more of my (personal favorite) shots from this session!

    More Where That Came From

    foam core large ornaments' class=

I’m up to my eyeballs in ornaments, folks. In over my head, knee deep, wading through my studio to get out the door. There are twenty of ’em floating around, about 14″ in diameter, drying and waiting for glitter, gloss and ribbon.

I have exactly two days to get about a weeks worth of stuff done, as I’m pretty sure the Hospital won’t let me go wireless in the waiting room … (er, will they?)

I’ve maxed myself out on charitable contributions again this year. And by that I mean I am a “yes” girl! I can do it! I can do ANYTHING! In TWO days! YES I CAN! See my giant “ASK ME” flashing banner on my forehead? No? Well look again! Cause if you have another project that needs doing, I’m sure I can squeeze it in!! And I will do it with a smile on my face!

… I save the grumbling for my wonderful husband, who spent a couple hours cutting all of these out after I made the template and drew them on the foam-core board. And my wonderful daughter who painted the silver tops, and my other wonderful daughter who will be POUT if she doesn’t see some glitter action.

Somehow though, they will get finished and I will manage to find an extra 30 hours between now and Wednesday so that I’m not in complete panic mode taking a few days off to NOT think or concern myself with anything other than how my Mom is doing.

It’s amazing how you can really believe you’ve maxed yourself out – but in the end, giving your time and effort away freely can be pretty rewarding, if you are generous for the right reasons.

    When I’m Not Working,

When I’m not working, I’m freezing, people. Holy cannoli, it was NINE lastnight. Nine. Nine degrees. Ugh. That is just stupid cold. Really. How do I manage to forget every year that this part of the country really stinks and WHY haven’t I moved to a warmer climate yet?!

I am the type that, once frozen, does not thaw until Spring. My nose is cold. My fingers are numb from the second knuckle up. My eyes are dry and my toes are shivering. The only thing I want to do in the winter is curl up under my blankie and/or bake. Yes, bake. Brownies, cookies, cakes, whatever – just keep the dang oven on and don’t turn it off ’til March. Oh and this is SO not good for my *cough* girlish figure! Not good at all. Dang Betty Crocker and her Super Deluxe Moist Turtle Fudge Brownie goodness. I will smack her if I ever meet her.

I do have a question for you today, if you’ve made it this far (thank you, the check is in the mail.) – My mom is undergoing Open Heart Surgery next week. (I capitalize because that is a surgery that demands some respect, IMHO.) Now she truly needs this surgery and it will greatly improve her health, so I am relieved that it’s proceeding, finally.

I would really like for you to share with me a story or tidbit about you or someone you know who has undergone Open Heart and tell me how they are doing now. Truly, I ask because my feeling is that medical technology is such that there is less to fear now than ever before – my concerns are with recovery and the mental processing of having the surgery. So please share your experience, and also – if you could keep my mom in your prayers I would be most grateful.

    Cat Portrait Pencil Drawing

custom cat portrait art pencil graphite drawing

See, power outages can be a good thing. I had received this commission to paint a pencil portrait of Moggie in a 4″ wide by 10″ high size a couple of weeks ago. Peeling myself away from the online part of making my living can be pretty tough, and honestly? I have a confession to make. I procrastinate. For good reason, I think (sometimes).

I haven’t drawn a drawing since High School.

Seriously, a true graphite pencil start to finish full drawing in its final form this is IT piece of artwork – it’s been about 18 years. You’d think that since I’m an artist for a living, I would produce more graphite drawings. I’ve worked in colored pencil, watercolor, oil, acrylic, even india inks – but it’s rare that someone asks a graphite of me. I always attributed that to not having any in my portfolio, I guess.

Once in a while though, I get a client who asks “can you do this?….” and of course I never decline. I will, however, procrastinate at least a little out of sheer fear that I’m totally inept and unable to create something with a certain medium on a certain ground.

I know, it’s crazy. I should know by know that this fear of mine is all in my head. This God given gift just flows through my hands out onto whatever is in front of me with whatever tool I have in my hand. I am so humbled by that. I finished Moggie lastnight (well, almost – she is in proofing stage and still needs whiskers and her tag wording, and then of course my signature) and when I took my hand away from the pad I thought “Woah. Well. There she is.” And when you finish something and see it through your own eyes but know it happened not because of anything you learned in school or taught yourself, it’s a sort of euphoria that you can’t feel from anything else.

It’s when you crave that euphoria that you find yourself doing what you’re meant to do more often, and feeling a sense of peace and calm in your life that you can’t attain any other way.

This is what dreams are made of, and this is how you live them.

    The Power of … Power.

    December
    2
    2007

At 9pm yesterday (Saturday), we lost power and it was just restored about an hour ago. I can tell you this – I am feeling the strong desire to learn how to be energy independent. I felt like someone chopped off my arms and said “NOW let’s see you pick up sticks!” Sheesh. No shower. No latte. No garage door opener, no lights. No phone, no computer, no toaster. No nothing. We spent the whole day wandering around stores to stay warm, since the temp dropped in our house about 15 degrees overnight.

    I’m really, truly spoiled.

I thought about those people who normally go without all these things that are just part of my daily life. I really respect those people, because I realized today what a brat I am. I told my hubby we should just become missionaries and really try to find ways around technology – but he kinda already has that experience being in Iraq and training in situations like this. I wish I weren’t so put out by it today, and I thanked God when we got home from the store and saw our lights on. Deep down, I think I’m given these trials to help me become more empathetic to those who have to go without much more for so much longer than we do.

We did spend some time today in the peace and quiet of nothing running in our home, and I started working on my cat portrait. I’ll show you how that’s coming tomorrow.

All I want now is a hot shower and a blow dryer, you know what I’m sayin? I know you didn’t miss me, but dang – it’s good to be back.

    Decorating The Blog

I’ve just put the first ornament on the tree, and I’ve added an audio player (that only plays when you tell it to) and will add some holiday tunes for your listening enjoyment through the Holiday.

Let me know if you have favorites (ornaments or Christmas songs) that you’d like me to include! And also? There are naysayers out there who think sprucing up the blog with a Holiday design is all for naught. What are your thoughts on it?
