    The Perfect Post

    December

    2006

Today is the day for The Perfect Post Awards. I had to partake this month, because I read this entry by the One And Only MommaK about Thanksgiving, and it really touched my Holiday Heartstrings.

“Thankful. I knew what it meant. I’m sure you did too. We knew that we should be damn grateful for having a huge turkey dinner with Aunt Sally, Cousin Mike and Nana in attendance. We rolled our eyes as we were forced to go around the table and each say what we were thankful for but we knew its importance. Many had to wipe their eyes and noses so a box of kleenex was kept close at hand. We were delighted to have a four day holiday from school and that the smell of the first snow was in the air. We were thankful. Oh yes, we were.”

She really gives good blog, if you know what I’m sayin’, so please take a minute and enjoy her entire post, “No Thank You?” and thank her, for me.

    My other Thirteens
    1. As soon as I finish this, I’m on my way out in search of a pair of Levi’s. Seriously, I’ve been looking for weeks, but can’t find a pair that aren’t boot cut or flare. WHAT, pray tell, is wrong with STRAIGHT LEG? Someone please clue me in. And wish me luck. Update: found some. Boot cut. Sigh. Still – Levi’s rock. There was no squiggling, hopping or slithering involved in pulling them up. Yahoo!

    2. I’m so in the dark about hairstyles. My 13 year old neice recently did my hair for me when she was visiting, and she used a straightening iron. Does it show my age that I didn’t even know there was such a thing? Oy. Now I have one. And it’s really neat, I think. I’m still figuring it out.

    3. I picked up my photography from the museum last weekend. I said a long time ago that I’d post a pic of my peacock with the ribbon, so here it is (finally).

    4. We still have the feeders full for the birds, and I’m suprised to still see quite a few Goldfinches stopping by to eat. This couple was here for breakfast the other morning:

They shed their vivid yellow for winter, but they’re still beautiful in my book.

    5. We had 5 squirrels here all at the same time this week, too. 4 black and 1 gray, the gray one likes to climb the feeder poles and eat right from the source, the rest are happy to eat leftovers on the ground. This one, with the longest fingernails I’ve ever seen on a squirrel, was munching on leaves.

    6. Tuckerhead (our 8 month old Wheaten Terrier) is doing well in puppy training. The day after training is always his best day because I’ve beaten him (not literally) into submission. Here he is, totally chillin’ out:

What is it about terriers that make them think they own the house, anyway? Maybe it’s just that I’ve got a dog now who acts just like his owner. Ahem.

    7. Have you ever gone looking for a kaleidoscope? I dare you. I thought (stupid me) that it would be an easy score, right in the kids party goods section. Right? Wrong. After stopping at 10 stores, Chickeymonkey held back big alligator tears that we couldn’t find one anywhere. The last resort (which is now going to become the first) – google. We googled kaleidoscopes, and found a specialty store online. Lucky Chickeymonkey, she now has a pshychedelic optical toy covered in monkeys.

    8. I am slowly weaning off crack, which in my case are vanilla lattes. I was up to 5 a day there for a while, now I’m down to one in the morning. Seriously, the gals at the Java Hut must have snickered when they saw me jittering and needy begging for another bottle of French Vanilla Flavoring.

    9. My studio is leaking. Again. Which means I need a new roof. Again. It’s not cheap, either. Things like this make me want to tear the whole house down and start over. Only in a new, improved location, with a really big piece of land in a warm climate.

    10. Red.

    11. I’ve been working on a forum for Thursday Thirteen (in my spare time, which is why it’s not live yet). This should be cool (she says, crossing her fingers, legs and eyes), because maybe once it’s active people will feel more a part of a community, sharing header graphics and info and things. That will be swell. I think.

    12. Waiting for layers to dry has to be the one thing that truly tests my patience as an artist.

    13. I shopped online yesterday. Imaginary shopping, I call it. I went to http://coldwatercreek.com and added all of the things I love to my shopping cart, and then proceeded to checkout, right up until you put a method of payment in there. Then I about died, because the total was UN•believably IN•sane. Thankfully, ’tis not the season to shop for myself, so I quickly emptied my cart and closed my browser window. Urge vanquished. I feel much better now.

This was a weekend of putting up Holiday Decor, as is tradition for many people right after Thanksgiving. I thought I’d dig through my old themes and revive last years Christmas decor for my blog, as well.

The countdown begins, and all that fancy wrapping paper and tape is ready and waiting!

I’m the Holes in His Bags

    November

    2006

I’m the holes in his bags, I’m Glad.

I can’t tell you how long it’s been that I’ve gone to the trash can after my hubby has put a new bag in, only to find that there’s too much air in there, you know? Call me neurotic, but it’s a pet peeve. The more air in there, the less junk I can put in the trash. For years now, I’ve snuck in a few minutes after he’s put a new bag in only to let out the air trapped inside, between the bag and the can.

I never say a word – because honestly, who has the heart to tell a grown man how to take out the trash? That’s just wrong. Besides, I would risk having to do the chore myself if I insulted him to the point of (you know what’s coming) “fine, do it your dam* self.” I couldn’t do it.

Air in the bag, I can live with that. I can live with being the “air letter outer”. No problem.

Today, for some reason, I took the plunge. I did. I’m a daredevil, that’s me. Here’s how the whole thing went down:

    Me

        : “Honey?”

    Him

        : “yeah?”

    Me

: “Could I get you to let the air out of the bags when you put a new one in the trash?”

    Him

        : “What for?”

    Me

: “Well, it’s kinda like wrapping the trash up in bubble wrap. If you take the bubble wrap away, there’s room for more trash.”

    Him

: “That air goes away, honey.”

    Me

: “Uhm, no, it doesn’t sweetie.”

    Him

: “It always does, there’s holes in the bags for the air to escape.”

Pause. For a moment. Just to giggle and snicker.

Me: “Honey, I hate to tell you this, but I’m the holes in your bags. I’ve been letting the air out for years.”

this is a true story, I swear it. It just happened a half hour ago.

    shadow box art
This is a shadow box that Catybug made for her teacher. I’m showing it to you so that you know for future reference now NOT to take over your kids projects.

I sorta did, take over I mean, but it was completely unintentional. In fact I think it’s just a “condition” that maybe could even have a diagnosis. Ahem.

Let me just say that you know it’s time to step away from the craft supplies when your child says something akin to “Well you’re the one doing everything, Mom”. I did (in my own defense) step away on several occasions to allow her some creative space. But every time I came back into the room I’d think “ooh and you could do this and it would look so cool! ”

To her credit, she had the whole thing sketched out before the project began. Before I went looking for a good sized box, before I started cutting up foam pieces and getting out brushes and paints for her. Yes, she painted everything. She built the bridge. She made 3 of the 4 little flowers. She selected the rocks, cut out the cloud, swirled the crazy wire for the sun, and all that jazz.

This is her project, really. Mom just helped her create a more three-dimensional environment.

I will probably never get one of these for my birthday. Why? Because, she said, “Mom, you can’t help me make your own birthday present.”

The trees are super cool, by the way. And her teacher loved it.

    An Apology

    2006

To everyone on my blogroll, all of my blogging friends that I’ve been lax in getting around to – I do still love you. I will try to improve and set aside a little time every day to stay in touch more, better. I do still read, quickly – but I do. My apologies, and hugs, too.

Please do me a favor or two, if you will. First, I need to know if I have you on my blogroll and if your link is right. (I did go through it and I hope I didn’t forget anyone.)

Second, please ask me a question from something you’ve blogged lately about something that is important to you; this will challenge me to spend quality time at your place.
