    agog and aghast stammtisch

Just completed, the new home of Agog and Aghast. Raehan recently decided to make the switch from Blogger to WordPress on her own domain, and I’ve spent some time recoding her template and moving her archives into a new place for her family writings, and then creating a whole new blog and design for her to hang her literary masterpieces in Stammtisch (loosely translated from German: a table at a restaurant that is reserved for a group of regular customers).

Please, stop by and have a Cuppa with Raehan in her new space, you won’t be disappointed.

    Band Aid Shopping

band aidNever in a million years did I think that I’d spend 20 minutes looking at Band-Aids, trying to select the perfect band-aid for a certain wound.

It has, indeed, come to that.

I comparison shopped Band-Aids yesterday. How many of you have done this? Debated over flourescents, cushioned – waterproof or flexible fabrics. Sheer or clear? Big or small? Will that little bitty patch of cotton cover the wound? Do you really need 80 of them, or will 15 be enough? If you’re using an antibiotic ointment, is it okay to get the ones with antibiotic in the pad now, or is that overkill? Do you not use the ointment? Is the stuff in the pad as effective? Oh hell, go back to the Disney Band-Aids. Do you need the clear ones, or the neon? Would the girls rather have soft pastels? Do they care? DO I CARE? OMG.

    O. M. G.

What have they done to us, these cruel Band-Aid Manufacturers? Look at how bad it is, that a Mom spends 20 minutes staring at hundreds of boxes, just as many selections. For one finger wound. Because we’re almost out. Of course I have to consider all future wounds – or at least 80 of them, otherwise I’m throwing money away. Right? Right. Why buy a box of assorted Band-Aids if the little square one is never going to be used? We do use them, those are our amusement Band-Aids. The ones that show we care about that little freckle you’re calling an owie, and we will cover it up as long as you think it hurts.

It’s just a freakin’ Band-Aid, people. Cover the wound until it heals. Isn’t that the point?

    So.

Twenty minutes later, I make a selection. I was so proud of myself, they were even on sale! WoOt!

I get home, and I’m so organized that I went and grabbed the nearly-empty box to transfer it’s remaining contents into the new box.

    Guess what.

I bought the same freakin’ kind.

Sigh. Twenty minutes out of my life gone. I can’t get them back, those twenty minutes – and for what?

    My other Thirteens
    1. Mama always said, “if you can’t say nothin’ nice, don’t say nothin’ at all”.

    2. I could use a roll of duct tape for that, Mom.

    3. I am grieving the loss of two beautiful shade trees this week. They’ve been hacked.

    4. I do seriously wonder if that’s so “good for the trees” how trees ever managed to survive before man came along to make them “healthy”.

    5. I watched as a limb fell and a squirrel was flung to the ground – he scampered to find shelter across the street.

    6. Instead of simply apologizing (“woops, sorry ma’am” would have sufficed) for one large limb breaking the peonies that I’ve spent 5 years trying to grow, the guy spent entirely too much time telling me they grow back and I should mow them over. After he told me the “water’s just weighing them down”.

    7. By the end of next week, I hope to have an entirely different perspective – because right now I would give my last piece of Apple Pie to the first person to arrive with and help me pack up a U-Haul van. By the end of next week, I shall have solitude while I work. I am determined.

    8. I made myself THE yummiest reuben sandwich EVER for lunch today.

    9. I have my next Eye Ate It™ piece prepared, but haven’t painted it yet. Tomorrow.

    10. I didn’t know until this morning that I received three awards, not two, for my entries into the Putnam Museum Bird Photography contest. I thought that my Peacock was the only one to receive awards, but my Portrait of an Eagle also received Honorable Mention in the Eagles, Hawks & Owls category. Yay! Both of those are available in print, too.

    11. I was feeling stumped this morning and getting frustrated, so when I made my lunch, I chose a yellow plate to put my sandwich on. It cheered me up. So there you go, when you’re feeling blue, pick yellow.

    12. Today, this was going to be my 13. Just for laughs. Well, I thought it was funny. But then I thought it would offend people, so I kept typing.

    13. I’m going to get back to work now!

    Apple Pie (and other stuff)

    homemade apple pie

Our neighbor has two big beautiful apple trees in their backyard. We stopped over the other day and he filled a grocery bag full of yellow and red apples for us. This weekend I peeled and sliced well over 10 cups of apples, and I still have a sink full. Catybug and I made this lovely deep dish apple pie, and I made 5 loaves of apple walnut bread. We shared the loaves with the neighbors, of course!

In other news, and as you can see (unless you’re feedreading), I’ve finally completed the blog design to match my new gallery design. Please let me know if anything is broken – or if there are regular features that you can’t find.

Now that the weekend hustle and bustle and slicing and dicing is over, I can resume normal activities – and munch on some tasty goodness during breaks!

What have you been up to? And more importantly, when is the last time you made (or ate) home made apple pie?

    soft coated wheaten terrier tucker
Our little Tucker reminded me so much of Barkley with his little innocent “petmepetmepetme” look.

“Come forth and pet me like the soft fuzzy puppy that I am”
We had a little photo shoot this morning since he’s freshly bathed and I gave him a pretty little furcut to clear his eyes. The top of his head is turning creamy white now, and I really don’t want to have him groomed or trimmed because he’ll wind up losing that pretty Wheat (aka Wheaten/Wheatie terrier) color they’re born with.

Here are a few more feature shots from our little Studmuffin Tuckerhead today:

    Starving The Chickeymonkey

    October

    2006

The truth finally came out today about why my little Chickeymonkey never finishes her sandwiches at school.

Every day, I doodle a little something on the girls’ sandwich bags. It’s always different, always just a cute little surprise to remind them I’m around in the middle of the day.

Today, I doodled this little girl. I thought she turned out so sweet and cute, I knew she’d be appreciated.

Sure enough, when I picked up the girls from school, I asked my daily question – “did you finish your lunch today?” and got my standard answer, “Nope”. I asked “why do I keep making you sandwiches if you never eat them?” and her reply just tickled me and brought a tear to my eye.

“I didn’t wanna finish my sandwich mommy because I didn’t wanna throw my bag away because the girl is too cute!”

    Awwwww…..
Then the guilt hit me. My kid isn’t eating her lunch because she doesn’t want to throw away the bag.

No wonder she comes home and eats me out of house & home – I’m starving my Chickeymonkey! Maybe next week I’ll doodle full bellied little girls throwing away bags with doodles on them.

    No Drama

    September
    28
    2006

I really love gossip. I’m normal, I’m a girl. I do not like drama, though. Drama is meant for professional actors.

If you’ve got gossip, I’ll listen. I love to know stuff, stuff that seems naughty to know. I even love to know stuff that’s nice to know. Am I going to form an opinion on anybody based on that gossip? Probably not. Gossip is what it is, word of mouth that has very likely been altered by the perception of the person dishing it. I take it for what it is.

Drama, however, I’m not so fond of. I don’t take anyone’s side other than my own. I know what I know, and I know that I don’t know the truth and I probably never will. Really, there is no truth – there are only opinions and perceptions.

Lately, there’s been some drama. There are dramas between bloggers – other bloggers, that I will not be part of. I do my best to like everyone, and stay out of the middle. I am not going to take sides on issues between people, the only thing that comes of that is an opinion, and that’s only based on the perception of exactly half of the people involved.

I’m not saying I’m not going to lend an ear or friendship to the one sharing their side of the story, but I’m not going to be one to get sucked into being on someone’s side over anything.

There’s been drama in my own life, too. I don’t like it, either. I can tell you that I’m glad I have the friends that I have, who I can share things with and they are intelligent enough to look at the situation objectively, and as much as I’d love for them to smother me in lavish “you’re so right’s”, I wouldn’t ever expect it. I realize that even in my own drama, I’ve got one perception and someone else has another. I wouldn’t think any of the people I’m close to would treat someone poorly over any feelings or opinions I’ve shared. In fact I’d prefer they didn’t.

No one is ever right, really, and I’m not too proud to apologize just to have peace, regardless of who I think is right or wrong.

There’s only common ground – be it one square inch – where you have to find some peace for the sake of sanity.

    For everything else, there’s Mastercard.
