    Last Year…

    March
    21
    2006

Last year, my hubby was just home from Iraq. I was looking this morning for a photograph I took last spring and ran across some entries that I thought I’d share on the anniversary of his Homecoming:

A Must Read : My thoughts on his impending arrival, and thanks to a bunch of people I pink puffy heart (and still do)!

    Boots on the Ground

Riley’s Portrait : Part of a vacation donation special I ran to fund our Disney trip, Riley’s portrait was still wet when Mark arrived home.

Thor & Oz were still wet, too. Man I love that piece. Birds are really difficult to paint, I pulled that one out in a rush – and it rocks.

This is the last monochromatic I did, right before we left on our first ever family vacation, a purple monochromatic portrait of an artist friend of mine, Tigerpixie. I need to do more of these, they’re a lot of fun!

A Thank you from my Hubby to everyone.

Last, but not least, what I was looking for. Snow on March 23rd, and I caught it with my (then) new camera. The snow has fallen once again this year, after Spring has been “called”. I am not fond of snow. Not one little bit.

I’m all done reminiscing now, a year has passed since he returned and we’re all good. He’s still serving in the Army National Guard and we’re still doing what we do, only now we’re planning our second vacation! I’m thankful he made it home safe & sound, and I’m grateful he’s not the only man – and we’re not the only family – willing to step up to the plate when we’re needed and sacrifice whatever we need to sacrifice to help people in a much less fortunate situation. I’m also grateful for the people of Iraq who appreciate our mission. These are much louder voices – and very real faces – to our men & women who tough it out over there in conditions we would never tolerate even for the poorest of the poor here in the States. My thoughts & prayers continue to go to all of them.

Happy Homecoming Anniversary to my hubby & his unit!

    When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
(click to play in a new window)

    When Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, ’tis like the morn in Spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing.
    When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.

    (view full lyrics here)

Are your irish eyes smiling? Send me a pic so I can show ’em off!

Littles : Cat Portrait WIP #1

    2006

Here’s another underpainting, this is Littles, an 8″ x 8″ oil portrait. Both Joey & Littles will take a day or two to dry before I can work their next layer(s).

Joey : Cat Portrait WIP #1

Joey and Littles are two cat portraits that I’m working on in oils. This is the underpainting of Joey’s portrait. Joey’s painting is small (4″ x 4″), so it will probably only need one more layer of fur and enhancements before he’s finished.

    My other Thirteens
    1. My latest crazy dream involved pregnancy. I was pregnant, 9 months in fact. I was having contractions, and went to the hospital, and was trying to ditch my husband because I was mad at him. Some lady with a week-old baby came up to me and apologized to me, said “I swear, if I knew I would never have done it”. You can figure the rest out all by yourselves.

    2. Another crazy dream (the night before last) involved a house fire. The roof of our home burned away to nothing leaving a big gaping hole to the sky – and it was spring, and the rains came, and it was pouring inside our house. Our bed was like a swimming pool, so I dove in and did a few laps.

Then we left to go buy a new refrigerator, because I’ve always wanted a side-by-side.

    3. Okay so I got a new credit card. It’s a Disney credit card. Guess which character I picked for my card?

    4. I’ve been using a lot of new skin care products lately. Trying things out. The ones I’m having the most success with are Dove (thanks Jeanette!) and a ProActiv knockoff that I found that has a clarifier and toner in it. Only problem with that one – it’s turned my white facial sponge orange. Hm. I wonder what’s in that stuff?

    5. We recently made a rather large purchase, a Bowflex from the second-hand exercise equipment store. I am determined to use the dang thing every single day, and so is our daughter. It is now her new “puttin’ my shoes on ma!” bench. Hey, at least it’s not storing our laundry…yet.

    6. I doodled that self-portrait in my header and colored myself in the other night. I had doodled several girlies and decided that this is going to be my ‘toon style. It was a true stretch for me to doodle something less-than-realistic, so it’s probably very shocking to those of you who have been around me and my work and my doodles for a long time.

    7. My sister (and I) thought of a new series that I could paint for my exhibition next spring. I’ll save the title of it as a surprise, but I’d like to ask you a favor – name your favorite bite-sized eatable. It doesn’t have to be a candy, just has to be bite sized, small’ish.

    8. My cholesterol is 141! Yay! Blood sugar is 87, yay again! I guess – I don’t understand blood sugar levels but I’ve been told this is an acceptable number.

    9. Did I tell you that I’ve developed a cool-pool-swimming-anxiety? Yes I am a freak of nature. If there are more than 2 people per lane, I can’t breathe or paddle my little legs through the water, and I may as well be on a respirator. I’m not going to the cool pool to have a heart attack, I was going to make my back feel better. Now my back is starting to hate me again, and the SUV Swimmer is probably pleased as punch with her lane hogging dog paddling self.

    10. The last time I went swimming, my suit was nearly elasto-bare and I pitched it in the trash on the way out. Why didn’t someone tell me I was shedding rubber?

    11. We have a 26×30’ish sized carport attached to our garage. The roof of the carport is flat. It constantly needs to be re-roofed, which is a pain in the patootie. We recently got a bid to either (a) demolish the damn thing or (b) peel off the roof and build a pitch, shingling it for longer durability. Guess which one is more expensive? Which one do you think we’ll be doing?

    12. I get catalogs from a place called Venus USA. I’m not sure how they found me, or why they assumed I had the body of a Playboy bunny, but I get these things every month and I’m forced to look at these cutsey tiny pieces of clothing modeled by women who I doubt ever gave birth in a catalog with sizes only available up to size 10. (I checked the measurements, and if they think an XL will fit a normal 12, they’re nuts.) Why? Why me? They mock me. I hate them.

    13. I’m buying my bikini out of that stupid catalog this year if it kills me. Should I start my liposuction fundrasier now?

Fake Bullet Holes : Fun, or Irresponsible?
    (see samples here)

    (image from bullet-hole-decals.com)

Do you think these decals on cars are entertaining? Do you think they should be banned? Do you think that they give the impression that the neighborhood that the decorated car is from is one that you wouldn’t choose for your family, let alone for your family van? If the owner of one of these decorated vehicles stopped to ask you directions – would you feel uneasy? Or is this something you don’t even think about when you’re around a car that’s seen “gunfire”?

Littles (the larger 8×8 canvas) and Joey (the small 4×4) are two kitties I’ll be painting (in oils) over the next week or so. I’ve got them sketched onto the canvas and will start working on their underpaintings tomorrow.

Crusty wants to know “how do you package your art for mailing/shipping?”

This one is easy. I keep a supply of 2 gallon freezer bags, peel & stick clearbags, and 8 1/2 x 11 precut cardboard mat in stock. Most of my paintings are small, and they go into the freezer bag. I keep and store the airbags from my art supply shipments, so I have plenty to pad my packages with. I really just make sure that my paintings are protected from water damage, pad them so they don’t shift in the box (or ship panels flat with extra cardboard on top & bottom). I haven’t had one painting damaged in transit.
