The above pic has nothing to do with my entry, but it does feel appropriate at the moment, so I’ll just let it speak on my behalf.

I received the application for consideration in the 2006-2007 exhibition schedule for MCFA. Last year, I applied but was declined, so this year I’m hesitant to apply. I didn’t realize that being “denied” by a gallery would impact me the way it did, and being a sensitive girlie-girl, it hurt my feelings. I’ve done just fine representing myself, so what do I need a gallery for?

    A ton of reasons.

So do I try again? I select 5 examples of my work. The best of what I have to offer. I have many favorite pieces, but I have no idea what best represents my abilities and the quality of my work. (Meaning I don’t feel objective enough to make that decision by myself.)

I’m going to call them today and hopefully they will offer some counsel on the topic since I’m so unfamiliar with how galleries work, let alone the jurying process. I may even have to block a large period of time over the next few months to work on pieces just to have paintings readily available to hang. That is another dilemma in itself, because many of my clients and return clients order very early for Christmas and I’ve been booked through the Holidays before the Christmas decorations even go up in the stores, and we all know how early that happens.

So. Could you help me out with this? Please? Name 5 paintings that you think best represent my abilities.

You can view paintings from 2005 here, and my 2004 collection here.

    Thank you for your input!!!!

It’s difficult, if not impossible, to select just five, but I would include: Ellie, Homecoming, Hyacinth Maccaw, Wildlife Suirrel, Dixie Cat as samplings of your abilities. I would also include Pearl Earring if I could.
You are just too talented to have to narrow it down to only five pieces!!!

I agree, picking out just five is so hard! Antoinette, Rusty, Into the Light, Homecoming and Stargazer Lily were the ones that “struck” me today. I love all of your works of art!

It is a juried show “competition” or is it to be juried to get accepted in the gallery as one of their artists? Also, what are you supposed to submit, slides?

I vote for Rusty and Sissy for certain. I also like the stargazer. I am interested in the same questions that Erikie asks. Maybe you need to tailor your entries to what fits the requirements. I am a firm believer in stretching yourself…so put yourself out there. take the RISK. 🙂

ok, you know I can’t pick just 5, but here are my favorites in no particular order. Antoinette, Alex, Mark in Oil, Pearl Earring, Riley, Lion, Ellie, Anniversary Rose and the Potatoes (gotta have some fun with it!) Go for it, and if they do not see your talent they are missing out, not you. You have so much to offer the world through your art so take the chance and you never know whose life you will get the opportunity to enrich! And like I said if they don’t see what we see they are fools! Hugs, clara

I don’t know how they pick? I know when we did a show at our restaurant (monthly) they sort of had to coordinate and not vary too extremely in subject matter. But I don’t know if they do that for a Gallery.

I like Grandma, Homecoming, Antoinette, Taba’s Mousie, Timmy, Purple Tigerpixie. Ooops, that’s too many because I like a lot of them. You’re so talented!

    Thanks so much you guys!!

I just spoke with the gal organizing all of the applicants entries. Here’s the rundown:

I can submit pieces that have been sold (phew, cause I only have 3 oils in my private collection!), and they are rated from 1-10 (10 being best) in the following areas:

    1. Impact – the piece should have a positive initial reaction when viewed.

    2. Concept – the approach to the subject matter is unique/different/original.

    3. Materials & Technique – the works show creative and proficient use of materials.

    4. Consistency – show a professional, mature and cohesive body of work.

She recommends (strongly) that all pieces are within the same genre, so I will have to stay within my animal paintings since that’s my primary genre.

That doesn’t mean that’s all I can show (should I get accepted this year), I can submit animals and hang digital photography, still life, whatever I choose once my work is on exhibit.

Okay. Time to narrow down the selection!
