  • Carbon Dating Challenge

    August

    2005

I’ve been reading a little bit tonight on carbon dating, and I have one question. Everything that I’ve seen says that it is a “fact” that the half-life of C14 is 5,730 years.

I’m sure someone, at some point, had to figure out that the number 5,730 was the stick by which to measure the age of really old stuff. Anyone care to point me in the direction of how the half-life of C14 was determined?

    Work In Progress

I’m working on an illustration, and usually I don’t share these works in progress. HOWEVER. You all think it’s all about catfish catfish catfish, and blah blah back stuff, and frankly you better knock it off or I’m just gonna … well … I’m gonna show you this teenie tiney piece of what is a huge painting on my monitor right now. (I’ve had a mommy kind of day, canya tell?)

So this is one of my graphic illustrations in progress, and you can just guess what it is. But this is what it looks like waaay super huge while I’m painting it, and when it’s done it looks all spiffy and neato freato and stuff.

So, do you know what it is? I made it too hard, didn’t I.

    😉

    The Auction

    August

    2005

Yesterday was Auction day for my beloved Hubby Trapped Inside the Fish. Only 15 of 20 were “For Sale”, and there were so few bidders at the event that some of them didn’t even get put up on the auction block.

The auction started off with one selected by the Auctioneer, and it ended at $400. After that one ended, the auctioneer asked which one the bidders wanted up next, and guess who’s was chosen? Yeahhhh baby! A few people hollered out for Trapped, so mine went up next. The excitement wasn’t less than it was for my Frog, but it didn’t last as long (my frog sold for $4100). Starting bid at $100, upped in increments of $50, a few people fought over it and it ended at $650. This was the trend for those that sold at auction yesterday.

I was not disappointed. Sure, it didn’t end where I would have liked for it to end, but given the number of bidders and the sheer lack of publicity, it went well. The new owners of my fish bought 3 total, and they will all be placed in a very nice business in downtown Rock Island.

I’ll be adding a detail page with all the info in my (new) gallery sometime today!

    Facelift Completed!

    2005

I’ve just gone LIVE with my new gallery setup! Please, browse away!

    New features:
    – Photography gallery
    – Graphic Illustration gallery
    – Easier browsing, faster loading
    – Comment feature enabled, client feedback is ALWAYS welcome and appreciated!!
    – The Print Shop! I’ll be adding prints of paintings and photographs here!
    – Large Projects Gallery: my catfish “Trapped” is here as well as one of my frogs, “Toronto Swampy”, I’ll be adding the other two frogs along with detail pages, too!

    Notes:
    – Firefoxers, still need to tweak some code for alignments’ sake, but it is viewable!
    – I’m still adding content and updating information that’s been moved over from the old layout.
    – The top thumbs are *not* clickable to the item detail. We disabled the links, and I’m considering re-linking them. (Let me know your thoughts on this, thumb links are “live” on the search page, so there’s a sample of how it works there!)
    – I will propegate each painting with keywords so that the search function is more inclusive. Right now you’d need to be pretty specific about what you’re looking for. Expanding search terms is on my to-do list!

Suggestions or comments on the new site? Leave those here! Comments on my paintings or photographs? Leave those in the gallery!

Links to the gallery and main index page of my website are here in the blog, over to the left. I plan on implementing the same design here on my blog as a skin option, but the one you are vewing now will still be available. That change is still a few weeks away.

I just love it. I hope you do, too!!

    Hummingbird

She came back! I cleaned out the feeder and refreshed the sugar water and voila! What a beautiful bird to watch, and SO hard to capture. Hopefully I’ll be able to get even closer now that she knows it’s a fresh source of food, and get better pics!

(I’m still working the gallery, I have a couple more things I need to fix before it goes live!)

    Fishy Weekend

    This is it!

This weekend is gonna be a busy one. Between finishing up my new gallery and going live with it today, heading down for a signing and fish-spiffy-upping, tomorrow with the events and auction – I’m going to be bouncing off the walls!

Not really, I’m not allowed to bounce anymore.

    Or bend or lift, either.

Back soon to let you know when the site has gone live, I hope you’ll have time to stop back later today and check it out!

    Bastages

    August

    2005

Some dumba$$es decided it was my turn to be hacked, so they dumped a “Paypal” folder into my domain and mass e-mailed a bajillion paypal users with some crap that they needed to update their password, etc, etc… You know the spam mail some people forward to spoof@paypal.com? Yes well the fraudulent link that people were redirected to? Right here on MY OWN DOMAIN. Bastages. Truly. I *wish* upon the biggest brightest star that people used their intelligence for GOOD, not EVIL and make real money doing real productive things in this life.

GAWD some people really truly SUCK!!

So my domain was suspended temporarily, I frantically spoke with my hosting company and they were so very nice about what I needed to do. All is well again, but you know? For a half hour or better I coulda just thrown up.

The good news? Really, there isn’t any. Come on. I just deleted the folders, but those jerks are still out there, and will do it to someone else. I wish there were good news.

Is it time for a password change on all of your accounts?

UPDATE: A great way to avoid this on your own domain? Go into your cpanel, create a paypal folder, lock it up with a password, and then add a redirect from that paypal/ directory to your index page. There. Then if they try to dump that crap on your server, anyone who clicks the link in a spoof e-mail will get redirected immediately, and the hackers can get to work on another evil plan to destroy random webmaster’s days.

    Baaaaaah, Baby.

13 Super Sweet Morsels about Leanne
    My other Thirteens

    1. I just rehung my hummingbird feeder after seeing a hummingbird perched on the tree in my front yard this morning!

    2. I am fairly certain that hummingbird will come back when I'm not looking, or when I am looking but without my camera poised and ready to shoot.

    3. I haven't written a check in 7 days.

    4. So far this morning I've had 8 cups of coffee, and I've been awake for 3 1/2 hours.

    5. I was really kidding when I said that I'm famous. I know I won't be famous until after I'm dead!

    6. I just canceled a dentist appointment I had tomorrow to get my tooth filed down for a crown. This is the 5th time I've canceled this appointment.

    7. I don't want to reschedule that appointment, 'cause I hate going to the dentist!!

    8. I have three new illustration orders to work on.

    9. Another one of my photographs is going to be published in a book this fall!

    10. My studio is a mess, there are boxes full of paperwork that I need to file and I keep putting it off because those nice storage filing boxes? Cost a whole bunch each.

    11. I gave a print of my Cecada photograph to my nephew, framed and "autographed" and he squealed his little head off in excitement and that made my day.

    12. I mowed the lawn yesterday.

    13. Because my girls cleaned up the backyard of their toys while I mowed the front, I treated them each to dinner of their choice, and it took an hour of traveling to and from to get Hardee's for Chickeymonkey, and McD's for Catybug. My Children Are Spoiled.
